Journey Behind the Falls vs Cave of the Winds

Canadian side vs American side — what each experience involves, which one this Toronto tour includes, and whether you'd need a passport for the other.

Updated April 2026

Niagara Falls has two tunnel-and-platform experiences — one on each side of the border — and they’re completely different. Journey Behind the Falls is on the Canadian side, descending through rock carved behind Horseshoe Falls. Cave of the Winds is on the American side, bringing you down to a wooden boardwalk at the base of Bridal Veil Falls. The Niagara Falls day tour from Toronto stays on the Canadian side and includes Journey Behind the Falls with VIP skip-the-line access. This guide covers what each experience involves so you understand what you’re getting.

Journey Behind the Falls (Canadian Side)

Journey Behind the Falls is built into the rock of the Niagara Escarpment directly behind Horseshoe Falls — the large, curved Canadian falls. The experience is operated by Niagara Parks and runs year-round.

What happens:

  1. You descend 38 metres (125 feet) by elevator through solid bedrock
  2. You walk through two tunnels cut into the rock, emerging at observation portals that look directly at the back of the falling curtain of water
  3. A third portal positions you beside the falls, looking out at the Niagara River gorge

The sound and force at the observation portals is disorienting in the best way — the falls are immediately in front of you, the rock rumbles, and the mist is unavoidable. Plan for 30 to 45 minutes from entry to exit, including the elevator and walk. In peak season (July–August), queues add time — the VIP access included in this tour skips the general line.

Journey Behind the Falls operates year-round, which makes it the anchor experience for winter visitors when the boat is not running. In winter, the portals look out at ice formations along the gorge — a genuinely different view from any summer visit.

The VIP add-on for this tour costs approximately $23 on top of the $57 base price.

Cave of the Winds (American Side)

Cave of the Winds is located in Niagara Falls State Park on the New York side and brings you to the base of Bridal Veil Falls — the narrower, smaller American falls separated from Horseshoe Falls by Goat Island.

What happens:

  1. You descend by elevator from Goat Island
  2. You walk wooden boardwalk paths down to the Hurricane Deck — a platform positioned metres from the base of Bridal Veil Falls
  3. At the Hurricane Deck, you’re fully in the spray — a poncho is provided, but you will get significantly wet

The Hurricane Deck experience is more physically intense than Journey Behind the Falls — it’s outdoor, exposed, and soaking. Disposable sandals are typically provided because water levels on the deck can be substantial.

Cave of the Winds typically operates from May through November (it closes in winter due to ice hazard on the boardwalk). Pricing is separate and charged at the American side — check niagarafallsusa.com for current rates.

Which One Should You Do?

If you’re arriving on a Toronto day tour, the answer is decided for you: the tour includes Journey Behind the Falls and stays on the Canadian side. No passport or US entry is needed.

If you specifically want Cave of the Winds, you’d need to cross the Rainbow Bridge into the United States — which requires a valid passport (and potentially a US visa depending on your nationality). You would book Cave of the Winds separately at Niagara Falls State Park and arrange your own transport on the American side.

The two experiences are not in direct competition — they show you different falls from different perspectives. If you’re doing a dedicated multi-day trip to Niagara and want both, that’s a legitimate plan. But for a single day from Toronto on the Canadian side, Journey Behind the Falls is the right choice — and with VIP access, the queue is managed.
