Niagara City Cruises vs Maid of the Mist
Hornblower rebranded to Niagara City Cruises in 2022. Here's what's different from Maid of the Mist, which side each departs from, and which one this tour uses.
If you’ve searched for the Niagara Falls boat experience and encountered three different names — Maid of the Mist, Hornblower, and Niagara City Cruises — this guide explains what’s going on. They are not three different operators. There are two boats: one on the American side, one on the Canadian side. The Niagara Falls day tour from Toronto uses the Canadian-side boat — now officially called Niagara City Cruises.

Why There Are Two Names on the Canadian Side
Until 2022, the Canadian-side boat was operated by Hornblower Niagara Cruises — a brand that many travellers still search for today. In 2022, the Niagara Parks Commission brought the operation under its own brand: Niagara City Cruises. The boats, the route, the red ponchos, and the experience are unchanged. Only the name changed.
This creates genuine confusion: older reviews, travel blogs, and booking platforms often still say “Hornblower.” If you see Hornblower mentioned in the context of a Canadian-side tour, it is the same experience now sold as Niagara City Cruises.
What Both Boats Actually Do
Both Niagara City Cruises and Maid of the Mist do the same thing: take you from a dock to the base of Horseshoe Falls — the large, curved, Canadian falls that produces the most dramatic mist and roar. From the deck, you’re directly in front of the falls curtain with water falling approximately 57 metres around you.
The boats approach from different sides of the river, but both end up in the same basin. The visual experience is effectively identical. The main difference is which country you’re standing in when you board.
Which Side Is Better?
For visitors arriving from Toronto on a guided day tour, the question is settled: you’re on the Canadian side, using Niagara City Cruises. The Canadian vantage point has long been considered the superior viewing position — you’re looking at both American Falls and Horseshoe Falls from across the river, and the iconic panoramic shot of all three falls is only available from the Ontario side.
If you specifically want Maid of the Mist, you would need to cross into the United States — which requires a passport (and potentially a US visa depending on your nationality), crossing the Rainbow Bridge, and booking separately from the American side.
The Toronto day tour stays entirely on the Canadian side. No passport needed.
This Tour: Niagara City Cruises with Skip-the-Line Access
The Niagara Falls day tour from Toronto includes optional Niagara City Cruises boat access with skip-the-line boarding — an important perk in peak season (July–August) when general queue times can be long. The boat add-on costs approximately $30 CAD (~$22 USD) on top of the $57 base tour price.
The boat operates from approximately May 8 through November 30. Outside this window, the tour uses Journey Behind the Falls or Niagara Takes Flight as the water-experience substitute.
